Is evening television letting you down? Tired of the same old, same old? Ever get puzzled by the amount of programs that feature a forensic doctor solving a crime by peering into a body cavity? Then I have a delightful alternative for you. Try your local high school! Yes, that’s what I said, your local high school.

Recently, I had the extreme pleasure of attending the Pilgrim High School Players production of Moon Over Buffalo. The story is a play within a play set in post WWII Buffalo New York and revolves around a theatrical family facing financial, as well as, personal difficulties. The play is a fast paced comedy with a very talented cast, a super set design, and wonderful production values.

At the center of this production is Richard Dennigham, the director and guiding force behind the Pilgrim Players. He has an uncanny ability to cast just the right person in just the right role to elevate his productions and allow the actors to showcase their talents.

But wonderful productions such as this are not solely to be found at Pilgrim High School. As a former School Committee member, I had the great fortune of attending numerous plays, band concerts, and vocal performances all over our city. I mention this as I could not help but notice that the Pilgrim Auditorium was not as full as I would have hoped. And I find this troubling.

We as a city demand the best from our students. They have pressures to pass tests, complete graduation requirements, and adhere to demanding schedules. Can’t we at least take some time to show our appreciation and support? We’re so quick to pass judgment on the few “bad seeds,” don’t our best and brightest deserve our applause? I think they do. No actually, I know they do.

I urge everyone to seek out these wonderful plays or concerts. Your program guide is nearly limitless. It runs the gamut of an evening delighting to the beautiful voices of elementary school children singing their favorite Disney tunes (with the helpful coaching of their music teacher) to more masterful performances like the one I’ve described here, or anything in between.

Although the current school year is drawing to a close, I know that I’ll be keeping a watchful eye out for some wonderful productions next year. I heartily encourage and invite all of you to do the same. I’ll save you some aisle seats.
