Save The Bay seeks nominations for environmental awards

Now through April 17, Save The Bay is accepting nominations for its 2015 annual environmental awards, the Environmental Achievement Award and the Alison J. Walsh Award for Outstanding Environmental Advocacy. Winners will be awarded and presented at the organizations annual meeting and Taste of the Bay event on June 11.

“We encourage community members to nominate people or organizations that exemplify the dedicated stewardship of Narragansett Bay that reflects the Save The Bay mission. The success of our efforts depends on the active involvement and stewardship of countless others in protecting and improving the Bay, and this is our small way of honoring and recognizing some of them,” Save The Bay Executive Director Jonathan Stone said in a statement.

The Environmental Achievement Award is presented annually to individuals, corporations or organizations that have demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment to the environmental protection of Narragansett Bay and its watershed.

The 2014 recipient of this award is Walter Burke, director of the Town of Bristol’s Department of Parks and Recreation. In his nomination of Burke, Stan Dimock wrote that Burke has incorporated Save The Bay’s mission into everything he accomplishes. Habitat restoration is at the forefront of every project he undertakes. Notably, Burke led an ambitious restoration project of the Bristol Town Beach and surrounding area.

The Alison J. Walsh Award for Outstanding Environmental Advocacy is awarded annually to an individual who has displayed an extraordinary commitment to the environmental protection of Narragansett Bay and its watershed through advocacy, community leadership, and/or direct action. The winner receives a $1,000 cash award.

Nominated by the Barrington Land Conservation Trust, educator Charlotte Sornborger is the 2014 recipient of this award. As president and board member of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust, Sornborgers tireless advocacy for the environment and conservation left a permanent legacy of beautiful protected places in Barrington, the results of which have extended well beyond the towns borders.

Submission deadline for nominations is Friday, April 17. Nominations can be made online at www.savebay.org/annual-awards. Written application forms can be obtained by calling 272-3540. Printed nomination forms are also available at Save The Bays Providence Bay Center, Exploration Center and Aquarium in Newport, and South Coast Center in Westerly.
