This year’s recipient of the Sen. McCaffrey Community Service Scholarship is Warwick Vets senior Ryan Costa. Ryan is an honor roll student, an Eagle Scout, a three-sport athlete and a trombone player in the school band. But most important are his community service activities including Food Drive, Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer, Oakland Beach Clean-up, Pennies From Heaven, CPR certification, and many activities at St. Kevin Church. Ryan will use the $1,000 scholarship to attend Salve Regina University in the fall, where he will major in criminal justice. He aspires to be a police officer. From left are Sen. McCaffrey, Ryan Costa and Principal Gerry Habershaw.

    Congratulations Ryan Costa!!!!!

You have received so many accomplishments and you're still "just a kid!"!

Your principal, Gerry Habershaw is one of Warwick's best. (and he seems pretty proud of you in that picture!) Senator McCaffrey, who founded the scholarship, is to be commended as well. The scholarship money wouldn't exist without him.

You also must have had fantastic teachers. Remember Ryan, you are only half of the team. You only learned as much as your teachers taught. Teachers in Warwick are under exceptional duress because they have been working without a contract for WAY TOO LONG! We Warwick taxpayers have paid over 1 BILLION dollars of our hard earned money since 2009 and today, we have teachers with no contracts, students with no Chromebooks (or similar tablets), buildings that are literally falling down and a (present) Mayor who just doesn't care. He claims he has a "hands off" policy but he has never even attended one School Committee meeting. That means he really has an "I don't care" policy. I am running as the endorsed Democrat for Mayor and I haven't missed one School Committee meeting (almost) and I support the teachers 100% and as Mayor I will continue to do so as much as the law and the WTU (Warwick Teachers Union) will allow.

Ryan, the teachers are willing to negotiate. The School Committee refuses. Please join me and rebel against the School Committee and help urge them to end this destructive tact and iron out a well deserved new contract for the teachers. You are living proof they have done their job. Now, please help them protect theirs. Call the members of the School Committee and urge them to sit with the Warwick Teachers Union. They deserve a new contract as much as you deserve your scholarship.

In the mean time please be my quest at Lemongrass at 1138 Post Rd. on August 8th from 5 to 8 P.M. We are having a fundraiser for my Mayoral campaign but bring no money; you and your family are my quests. I am looking forward to meeting you. In the meantime you can visit my website at www.correntemayorwarwick.com. See you then Ryan!
