Season celebrated at Walk with Cops Thanksgiving party

It’s a rite of November as much as turkey, stuffing and apple pie.

It’s a terrific tradition that has been around for two decades and builds strong bonds between two important groups, namely the Johnston Police Department and the town’s senior citizens.

“This is our 20th Walk with Cops Thanksgiving Party,” Chief of Police Richard S. Tamburini, who founded the award-winning program when he came to town 20 years ago, told a host of senior citizens inside the Johnston Senior Center’s multi-purpose room last Thursday morning. “We love having these events.”

And just as he welcomed people to last Thursday morning’s Walk with Cops – which is held in the warmer months inside Johnston War Memorial Park – Tamburini announced that the program’s annual Christmas Party is set for Dec. 10.

“We love this program,” Tamburini said. “We love connecting with you, our most important people – the town’s senior citizens.”

That also holds true for the police department’s ranking officers, including Deputy Chief Daniel Parrillo, Maj. Joe Razza, Capt. Thomas Dolan, Capt. Matt LeDuc, Sgt. Troy Maddocks and Patrolman Charles “Chuck” Psilopoulos, who helped serve breakfast items such as coffee, donuts, muffins, fruit, and yogurt.

What’s also unique about the Walk with Cops program – no matter when it’s held – is that local businesses participate in form of donating various food items.

The donors for last Thursday morning’s event were Brewed Awakening of Cherry Hill Plaza, Dunkin’ Donuts on Route 44, Cherry Hill Manor, and The Bridge at Cherry Hill.

In the middle of each and every Walk with Cops event is Marie Conti, who works in the police department’s Community Policing Unit. She coordinates the event and volunteers, who Tamburini honored with special certificates of appreciation last Thursday morning.

Those valuable volunteers are Camie Corrente, Chris Giardina, Adeline Zanni, and Debbie Simone.

Conti, meanwhile always adds a touch of class with unique centerpieces, which last Thursday were decorative flowers and pumpkins on placemats which were also decorated with glitter.
