Senerchia rolls past Providence

Senerchia crushed Providence Post 56, 18-0, on Tuesday night at Ardoene Park in Providence in just five innings. Joe Boland left the yard twice and Matt Sweeney hit a grand slam.

“It was good for those guys to really square those balls up like that and hit the ball with some authority,” Senerchia head coach Chris Sheehan said.

Not to be outdone though was Caleb Wurster, who pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts and one walk while giving up just one hit. That hit came with two down in the bottom of the fifth.

“He threw the ball really well,” Sheehan said. “He’s been throwing the ball well the last couple starts. He’s got really good stuff. He trusted his fastball tonight and obviously he had a ton of success with that.”

Wurster struck out the first seven batters he faced.

In the first inning, Gary Peralta was on the hill for Post 56 when Senerchia got the bases loaded. Boland then hit an RBI single to score the first run of the game. Next, Patrick Thomas knocked in Elijah Brown to increase the lead to 2-0. With runners at the corners, Domenic Crocenzi knocked in Nico Salvaggio and Senerchia led 3-0 after one inning.

In the top of the second, Senerchia’s Rob Vaillancourt walked to lead off. Then, Post 56 went to its bullpen and brought in Fennie Almanzar, who struck out Billy Roberge. Sweeney then blasted a double to center before Almanzar walked Brown. With runners at first and second, Salvaggio grounded out to third to strand the runners.

Boland blasted a solo shot over the center field wall to put Senerchia up 4-0 in the top of the third. Next, Thomas got on base after an error at first and Crocenzi followed it with a walk. With runners at first and second, Brian Cipolla singled to score Thomas, extending Senerchia’s lead to 5-0. Crocenzi scored from third on a passed ball minutes later, putting Senerchia up 6-0. It extended the lead to 7-0 when Cipolla scored from third after a balk was called by the home plate umpire.

In the bottom of the third, Wurster fanned the leadoff hitter before walking Ostin Pena. It wouldn’t matter as Pena would eventually get caught trying to steal second. Then, Wurster would strike out Almanzar to end the third.

Salvaggio led off the fourth with a walk before Boland blasted his second home run of the game over the center field wall, extending Senerchia’s lead to 9-0. Thomas singled next and he would take second after a balk was called against Almanzar.  Next, Almanzar struck out Crocenzi before Post 56 dipped back into its bullpen, this time summoning Darial Ramos. After a balk from Ramos, Thomas moved to third base. Then another balk was called on Ramos and Thomas scored, putting Senerchia on top 10-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Wurster continued to throw gas. He struck out Kevin Ciprian with a blazing fastball. After getting Raimiel Rodriguez to ground out, Wurster struck out the next hitter to end the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Sweeney dropped one in shallow right for a hit. Next, Brown walked. With runners at first and second, Salvaggio flew out to right and Boland flew out to center. Then, Thomas hit a rocket to right field, scoring both runners and putting Senerchia up 12-0. Thomas would swipe second as Crocenzi stood in the batters box. Then, Crocenzi smashed a single. With runners at the corners, Cipolla knocked one run in, extending the Senerchia lead to 13-0. Next, Colin McBride was hit by a pitch and that loaded the bases for Kyle Barbato. Ramos walked Barbato while also walking in a run, increasing Senerchia’s advantage to 14-0. With the bases reloaded, Sweeney launched a grand slam and Senerchia went up 18-0. Brown added to the outburst, hitting a ground-rule double next, before a new reliever, Luis Gutierrez, came in for Post 56 and struck out Salvaggio to end the top half of the fifth.

The Hawks were set to play at La Salle on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

They’ll be back in action tonight when they host Riverside Post 10 at 5:30 p.m.
