To the Editor:
Every Rhode Island senior who is choosing to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan during the current open enrollment period needs to know about the significant changes that have been made to the AARP Medicare Complete/UnitedHealthcare plan before making their final selection.
UnitedHealthcare has greatly reduced the number of physicians enrollees can see to receive care. Many are specialists who treat elderly patients with serious health care needs. This means that most elderly patients enrolling in this plan will have to find at least one new physician to treat them.
The choice of a health plan can be a confusing undertaking. It is especially difficult when one of only two Medicare Advantage plans in Rhode Island has so severely reduced the number of physicians available to treat their enrollees.
Seniors and their family members should contact the RI Division of Elderly Affairs’ Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) at 462-0510 to be sure their choice of a Medicare Advantage plan for 2014 is right for them.
