The Pilgrim football team got its regular season off to a rough start this past Friday, as it lost its opener to Division IV Smithfield 33-12 at home.
The Pats fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter before a 50-yard, second-quarter touchdown reception by Kevin Blanchette brought them back within 14-6.
But the Sentinels running game was too much, as they upped their lead to 20-6 at halftime and scored two more touchdowns in the second half. A one-yard touchdown run by Pilgrim’s Damian Brown in the fourth quarter made little difference, as the game was already out of reach.
Smithfield scored all five of its touchdowns on the ground, and it got 189 yards rushing from Dave Parrillo and 132 yards rushing from Ethan Palleschi.
While the Pats fell to 0-1, the game was a non-league match-up and does not count toward their Division II-B record. They will open their league season this Friday when they host Shea at 7 p.m.
Shea won its non-league opener 22-6 over Lincoln over the weekend.
