Centreville Rd. Crash
Serious but survivable injuries for accident victim

The Warwick Police responded to a report of a car colliding with a box truck at the intersection of Centreville Road and the Route 95 north off- ramp around noon on Tuesday.

The accident involved a passenger car operated by John Toney, 47, of North Kingstown, and a box truck.

James Serpa, 43, of Thornton, N.H., was driving the nearly empty truck and there were no passengers in either vehicle at the time. The operator of the car had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported by the Warwick Rescue to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries.

Exit 10 on Centreville Rd. had to be closed for several hours due to the crash and the cleanup. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management responded to assist with the cleanup of diesel fuel that leaked from the box truck as a result of the crash.

Investigators are interviewing witnesses to the collision. Initial investigation shows that the passenger vehicle was traveling eastbound when it lost control, striking the box truck in the westbound lane of travel. Investigators believe that Toney may have suffered a medical incident prior to the collision; however, the investigation is ongoing to determine if speed or alcohol were factors. Lt. Michael Gilbert said yesterday that Toney remains in serious but not life-threatening condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Any person with information related to the collision is requested to contact the Warwick Police Department Traffic Division at 468-4293.
