She popped big question at the gate

About all 400 attending Tuesday’s brainstorming session on the future of Rocky Point remembered riding the rides; about two-thirds said they had worked at the park and another two-thirds raised their hands when asked if they kissed their sweetheart at the park.

But only one hand was raised when the group was asked whether anyone had proposed marriage at the park. That was the hand of Meghan Costic of Cumberland. She was asked to share the story.

That’s not what she expected when she and her husband, Kevin, who were carrying their 5-week-old son, Travis, came to Rhodes on the Pawtuxet on Tuesday, but Meghan happily recounted the events of Feb. 29, 2012.

On a wintry day, Meghan suggested they drive down to the former entrance to the park on Rocky Point Avenue. Kevin, who describes himself as “totally obsessed” with anything to do with Rocky Point since the age of 8, readily agreed.

They parked and then Meghan led Kevin over to what remains of the gate and popped the big question.

Kevin told the audience he was totally surprised, but he said “Yes.”

Meghan elaborated on the event later. Yes, she had a ring, which Kevin flashed.

How did it happen that she proposed to him?

“That was leap day,” she said, adding that Irish tradition holds that is the one day every four years when a woman can propose to a man.

The pair married on Nov. 24, 2012.

Meghan and Kevin had plenty of ideas for Rocky Point. But they rapidly agreed they would love to see the entrance gate with its colorful rocking letters make a comeback. After all, the location has special meaning for them.
