Shekarchi ‘not likely’ to run for Lt. Gov.

Posted

Amid rumors following his visit to “The Buddy Cianci Show,” Representative Joe Shekarchi of Warwick cleared the air, saying it is “very unlikely” he will run for Lt. Governor in 2014.

During an appearance last Thursday on the former Providence mayor’s WPRO radio show, Shekarchi, the former campaign manager for General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, was questioned about a potential run at the position. When he admitted that he was considering other positions down the road but had not announced anything official, the rumor mill began turning.

Shekarchi was able to set the record straight during a recent interview with the Beacon.

“It is very unlikely,” said Shekarchi when asked about running for the position. He said for now he is much more concerned with working on local issues in Warwick as a member of the General Assembly.

However, he did not rule out running for another government position down the line.

“I never say no,” said Shekarchi.

During his appearance on “The Buddy Cianci Show,” Shekarchi did say he would consider running for Lt. Governor if he felt he could be “effective” in the position and truly work with the governor at the time.

When asked by Cianci who he supported for governor in 2014, Shekarchi said Raimondo would make an excellent governor.
