Shooting for the moon

Chemistry and physics teacher Michael Gray and his colleagues at Hendricken spent Friday performing community projects as part of the school’s community service day. Some of the activities at locations performed throughout the state included painting and yard work. Gray, who left his own company to become a teacher, chose to offer a physics lesson to St. Rose of Lima eighth graders. To illustrate and measure the effects a heavy object has when it hits the surface of the moon, Gray provided the students with pans with layers of cocoa, strawberry colored flour and chocolate jimmies. The students followed instructions, dropping ball bearings from different heights, measuring the depth of the craters and recording their findings. No, they didn’t get to eat any of the materials they experimented with, although some said it smelled delicious. With Gray from left are: Haley Gayer, Indira Romero and Evan Wildenhain.
