Colonel Stephen M. McCartney and the Community Services Division of the Warwick Police Department would like to invite its residents to attend its upcoming Citizens Police Academy.

The academy closely follows the actual hands-on training that police officers follow to teach citizens what their police department and its officers do every day and to build a stronger bond between the department and the city’s residents and businesses.

Attendees learn about the history and makeup of the Warwick Police Department; patrol operations; SWAT; crime scene investigation; DUI investigation; sex offender task force; and many more subjects.

Attendees will also learn how to operate a police vehicle and weapon safety and handling. A ride-along with a police officer is included in the program so attendees can see how police work is done on the street. All residents, regardless of gender or age, can enjoy the Citizens Police Academy. It is not specifically a police officer training program.

The academy runs for 10 consecutive weeks from March 18 through May 20 on Wednesday nights and is mainly held at the Warwick Police Department Headquarters located at 99 Veterans Memorial Dr.

The academy is free to all city residents and employees who are 18 or older with no criminal histories. Deadline for applications is March 11. Class size is limited to 30 participants.

For more information about the Citizens Police Academy, go to the Warwick Police Department web-site or contact Officer Steven Nelson at 468-4373 steven.nelson@warwickri.com.
