Another Rhode Island first: “Sing Rhode Island” is a small, colorful book of lyrics about Rhode Island set to 25 well known melodies with a CD included. There are 24 tracks with soloist and keyboard, as well as 20 tracks with keyboard alone, for the Rhode Islander with singing aspirations.

The songs offer perspective, information and humor. All lyrics are about Rhode Island. Some of these are: History, firsts and bests, foods, sports, state symbols, entertainment, people, colleges, cities and towns, militia units, driving, and state style.  Melodies on which the lyrics are based include tunes such as “Skip to My Lou,” “Home on the Range,” “Alouette,” “Yankee Doodle,” and “Santa Lucia.” There are some very nice surprises and there is something for all ages.

Roberta Mudge Humble of Warwick, author of many books and games on Rhode Island, is the lyricist. Soprano Maria Tavarozzi sings the songs to the keyboard artistry of Kevin Keough. The CD was recorded at Reel to Real Studios in Cranston.

The book with CD is now available (price is $10.99) in stores throughout the state and online at www.westerlyarmory.org. Proceeds go to the historic Westerly Armory to assist in creating additional space for the museum, the historic Westerly Band (oldest active civic band in the nation) and the community.
