Sky’s the limit for Sherman readers

Reading Week ended with a blast for students at Sherman Elementary School, literally.

As a reward for reaching their goal of reading 100,000 pages in just two weeks, the entire student body was treated to a visit from Ballistic Bruce of Mad Science, who launched a few rockets out of the school’s field.

Reading teacher Lauren Pellegrino said the school set a goal of only 30,000 pages last year, but read over 54,000. So they started the challenge over April vacation and challenged the school to read 100,000 in two weeks. If they did, Ballistic Bruce would bring his rockets to the school for a visit. The students surpassed that goal by reading 127,051 pages.

“It was a little scary there for a while,” said Pellegrino. But the students pulled through and got to see the rocket launch.

Seeing some rockets fly across the sky wasn’t the only thing Sherman students got to see on Friday; they were treated to an array of beautiful hats during the Vocabulary Parade.

Principal Michelle Paton said that each student received a vocabulary word, which they were to depict on a fun hat to wear for the day.

“The Vocabulary Parade is a fun way to expand their vocabulary,” said Paton, who applauded her students for their creativity. “They did a great job.”

Pellegrino said most of the hats she saw were tremendous.

Sherman’s Reading Week also included a Door Decorating Contest, the Pages Read contest, a Poem in Your Pocket day, a book fair, and a special event for families called the Celebration of Learning.

The evening event allowed families to come into the classroom and see all of the different things their children had been learning. Paton said the students were very excited to show off their classroom and their work to their families.

Prior to the Rocket Launch on Friday, Pellegrino, donning a unique Facebook-themed hat, announced some of the week’s contest winners.

Mrs. Jodi O’Rourke’s fourth grade classroom won a free homework pass for having the best decorated door, while the fifth grade won extra recess time for being the grade to read the most pages, with over 44,300.
