Slideshow at local cafe shows Oakland Beach back in the day

The Beach Café in Oakland Beach just got a touch of history added to its wall.

James Rengigas, whose family owned Mrs. Gus’s Doughboys, compiled a set of old photos from Oakland Beach and made it into a slideshow that will now permanently be on display a the café.

“I thought it would be nice to have something there for people who don’t have Internet,” he said.

The large TV on the wall provided a nice empty slate for the photos, Rengigas said. The photos span decades of Oakland Beach and Warwick history from the 1930s on. It documents some historical events like the 1938 hurricane and an old railroad that ran through the area. Photos also depict an old amusement park, summer homes and scenes of women holding parasols as they walk through the city.

Colleen Moranto, Dick Moranto and Brenda Esposito, who own and work at the café, said their customers think the photos are “wonderful.” Indeed, a few diners admire the photos and talk about their childhood memories of the city as they wait for their food. Colleen points out that there is a photo of the very area in which the café stands now. A drugstore used to be in its place.

The staff also enjoys watching the slideshow themselves from behind the bar or from the café floor when they have a spare moment, as well. That’s just what Rengigas likes to hear.

“Enjoy it. I hope it brings back good memories,” he said.

He hopes people will bring their families in to have a taste of both Beach Café’s food and the city’s history.

Check out the 127 historical photos at the café located at 805 Oakland Beach Ave.

Nice! I have not been there yet, but I hope to get there soon, for the slide show and for the food. Another place for good eats in the OB!
