Snogi brings frozen yogurt to Federal Hill

Warwick resident Celeste Orellana presides over the squeaky clean frozen yogurt shop on Federal Hill, overlooking the many Italian restaurants and pizza parlors, where Snogi offers a delicious dessert after dining on lasagna or a variety of other Italian delights.

Snogi is a small shop, brightly lit and opening onto the busy street. You can sit on colorful stools, read a magazine, watch TV, look at murals through 3D glasses or take your photo with an iPad.

“Many people go across the street and sit by the fountain in the square,” Celeste said.

Snogi is also a destination for those who fill a bowl with one or more of eight flavors of yogurt and a variety of 43 toppings, ranging from fresh berries, nuts and gummy bears to Ghiardelli’s white chocolate toppings. You grab your cup and spoon and select whatever combination of yogurt and toppings you desire, weighing the ingredients and paying 49 cents an ounce. Most people end up in the $5 range.

Yogurt flavors change, but there is always the mango sherbet for the lactose intolerant. We sampled all eight flavors and had a difficult time deciding which ones we liked best, forcing us to go back for more. All of the flavors were smooth and true to their taste. My favorites were the coffee and the coconut, while Joyce chose the peanut butter and the coconut. You must try the Dulce de le Leche, which has a distinct flavor and is one of Snogi’s most popular.

Celeste says that the children go for the gummy bear toppings. Joyce and I preferred the toasted coconut.

Snogi blends in well with the neighborhood. It is bright, cheery and welcoming, snuggled in between old favorites and new establishments that attract Rhode Islanders and tourists to the area. They are open seven days a week, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and midnight on weekends. The address is 262 Atwells Ave., Providence.
