Social media reports of attempted student abduction prove to be false

Warnings that an older man with a big nose may have attempted to abduct a student circulated wildly last Wednesday appearing on Facebook and local websites. But the reports proved to be erroneous, according to police.

“We’re satisfied there was not an abduction attempt,” Major Christine Kelley said Friday.

Kelley said police viewed surveillance video from the neighborhood where the incident allegedly happened and found nothing that collaborates the student’s story that a man attempted to grab her. Kelley said it appears the student told the story to friends who, in turn, posted it to their Facebook pages and that it mushroomed from there.

On May 21 police issued a release saying that on May 19 in the area of Osceola Avenue and Clearwater Street, shortly after 3:30 p.m., a 12-year-old student from the area reported to police that she was approached from behind by someone who tugged on her backpack and told her to “come here.”

Police reported the girl reacted by running home and reporting this incident to her parents. She was not followed by the subject.

Contrary to the postings on Facebook, the man was described as a white, high school age to 30 years, 6’0 tall, thin body build, short, dark hair, with a cut or scrape on his ankle. The subject was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, jeans with holes on the knees and white basketball-type sneakers with purple stripes.

Kelley said police had some “questions” with the story from the start, as there were inconsistencies between the postings.

Asked if there might be any action brought against the student, Kelley said, “We’ll review and see if we should take action.”
