Society plans Dec. 8 statewide luminaria in tribute to cancer victims

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life, a movement that unites all those who have been affected by cancer, invites all Rhode Islanders to participate in a simple, moving tribute that will celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost and provide support to families who will be missing or worrying about loved ones during a time of the year that can be especially tough for those affected by cancer.

Two weeks after Thanksgiving, on Dec. 8, the American Cancer Society will be providing a time for a region-wide visual tribute that will be a reminder of loss, triumph and hope. The Society is asking community members statewide to obtain luminaria – a bag with a candle or glow stick inside it that is personalized and decorated – in advance and place these glowing tributes on their front porches, front steps, or at the end of their driveways on Dec. 8. All will be lit simultaneously across New England at 6 p.m. in memory of someone lost to cancer, in honor of someone still fighting, or in special recognition of a survivor.

People can make a suggested $10 donation on www.acshopecampaign.org to receive a luminaria bag. We also are seeking coordinators at places of employment or neighborhoods throughout the state, to make it easier for Rhode Islanders to obtain the luminaria bags.

“We are a small state,” said Kayla Thompson, senior manager, Community Engagement, for the American Cancer Society. “And with more than 6,000 people expected to be diagnosed with cancer this year in Rhode Island alone, it could make quite a statement if everyone affected by cancer in the Ocean State donates to the cause and supports this campaign. It is easy, can be done from the comfort of your home or office and does not take a lot of time.”

To become a coordinator or learn more, visit www.acshopecampaign.org, www.facebook.com/acshopecampaign, or contact Kayla Thompson at kayla.thompson@cancer.org or 243-2650.
