The Rhode Island College baseball team saw its 2014 campaign come to an end last Friday, but not before a pair of players with Warwick connections made their presence felt throughout the season.

Hendricken alum Angelo St. Laurent saw action on the hill and in the field for the RIC nine this season, featuring in 32 games for the Anchormen.

After a trial at first base early in the season, St. Laurent found his niche as the team’s designated hitter, compiling a .261 average at the plate with three doubles and 16 runs batted in.

The ex-Hawk exhibited good discipline inside the batter’s box, chalking up 15 walks, none more important than the free pass that plated the go-ahead run that put RIC ahead for good in the fifth inning of its elimination game versus Plymouth State in the Little East tournament last Thursday.

St. Laurent also pitched in six contests, striking out seven while posting a 3.60 earned run average, the lowest figure on the club among players who hurled a minimum of 20 innings.

Like St. Laurent, junior righty Dylan Cummiskey was part of the pitching staff for the Anchormen, starting eight games and finishing the season with a 2-4 mark.

The former Toll Gate standout compiled a 6.50 earned run average and struck out 28 batters in 44.1 innings of work.

The RIC squad wrapped up its season at the Little East Conference tournament, in which they received the final seed in the six-team field.

The Anchormen were relegated to the losers’ bracket after top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State claimed the tournament opener last Wednesday 9-5, with Cummiskey coming on in long relief, surrendering three runs on eight hits along with a strikeout in six innings of work.

Next up for RIC was a do-or-die encounter with Plymouth State that saw the Anchormen claw back from a 3-0 deficit to stay alive with a 7-2 triumph over the Panthers, keyed by the aforementioned St. Laurent walk.

However, any dreams of a second upset win were dashed as Southern Maine sent the Anchormen packing with a 10-0 rout that saw the mercy rule invoked after the eighth inning.

Former Pilgrim standout Spencer Webb wrapped up his intercollegiate career at Plymouth State with a 4-4 record and 12 saves. His teammate, Hendricken graduate Jarek Krawjeski concluded the season with a .301 batting average . . . Warwick native and Hendricken alum Reuben Horace finished fifth in the hammer throw for Boston University at the New England Championships last weekend with an effort of 59.00 meters. Fellow ex-Hawk Mike Maloof finished ninth with a throw of 55.63 meters while representing the Terriers alongside Horace . . . Warwick Vets grad Michelle Sylvestre was named MVP of the Rhode Island College softball team in the school’s spring sports awards. Sylvestre was 9-11 with 16 complete games, one shutout, a 2.44 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 149 innings of work.
