St. Paul Church to host ‘Alpha Talks’ series

St. Paul Church of Edgewood will host “Alpha Talks,” the international dining and discussion series that focuses on different aspects of Christian faith.

The weekly sessions are geared towards people who are searching for spiritual direction in their lives. Participants may vary from occasional and non-practicing Catholics or others from different Christian denominations, to those unfamiliar or struggling with religious teachings, or questioning a belief in God.

The 12 sessions, which run from mid-October through January, provide a basic understanding of Christian principles and practical ways to incorporate them into daily life.

“Each week will cover another frequently asked question regarding who Jesus Christ was, the legacy he left behind for us, and how it relates to each of us as individuals,” said Julie Bradley, St. Paul’s director of Faith Formation, who along with Deacon Paul M. Shea is coordinating the program for the Roman Catholic parish.

Some topics are: the life of Christ, including information from Biblical and non-Biblical sources; reading the Bible; how God guides us; the Holy Spirit; and making the most of our lives in our remaining years.

Each evening begins with a meal and socializing, followed by the airing of a half hour video. They are tinged with humor, personal stories and historical perspectives to explain a basic tenet of faith. The audience then breaks into small groups to give everyone a chance to give their thoughts and feelings on the material and to ask questions.

“It will be a safe place for people to say what they think, even if they are unbelieving or have opinions contrary to church teachings,” Bradley said. “Alpha is a program that is made to appeal to all, including the skeptical or just curious and provide a benevolent and non-judgmental forum.”

“Alpha Talks” began in an Anglican Church in London, England, in 2000, and in the past 15 years has grown to include millions of people from a variety of Christian backgrounds throughout the world. St. Paul’s is embarking upon the program as a way to answer Pope Francis’ call for new evangelization efforts to reach a wider range of people. Parishioners are providing the technical and logistical support for the program, including set-up and meal service, leading discussion groups and inviting interested friends, neighbors and relatives to attend.

An introductory evening will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14 at St. Paul’s School, 1789 Broad St. in Cranston. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and supper is served at 6:30 p.m. Child care, including supper, will be provided so adults can enjoy dinner, the video and follow up discussion without worry or interruption. The evening concludes at 8:30 p.m.

The “Alpha Talks” are free and there is no charge for childcare. Pre-registration would be helpful, but is not required.
