The St. Peter’s girls midget team faced off against St. Augustine of Providence on Sunday and posted an impressive 24-14 victory.
With only one returning player and just four who have played organized basketball, there was uncertainty surrounding the season, but the win was a positive sign.
“We have what every coach would like with his team, we have speed, size and balance,” said head coach Frank Brown. “They are some of the most athletic girls I have seen."
St. Peter's jumped out early Sunday to a 10-2 lead thanks to its tenacious defense. St. Augustine made a run just prior to the half, cutting the lead to four. St. Peter’s then allowed just two baskets in the second half and cruised to the victory. Karly Evans had 10 points to lead St. Peter’s and Lexi Brown added four. Five other players also found the scoring column.
