St Rose students make 'eggcellent' new friends

On a recent morning the students in St. Rose of Lima’s Preschool and Rosebud programs were excited to meet their new friends: tiny, fluffy chicks.

Teachers Lori Healey and Tracy Medeiros get the eggs from Casey Farms and display them in their classrooms as a visual display of the life cycle. Every morning the class would have “chick news” following the progress of the chicks inside their eggs. Healey said that every time she has done the chick project her students respond very well.

“We really encompass every part of learning. There is a visual, hands-on and even audio component when they can hear the chicks. So we appeal to all types of learners.”

Fifteen out of the 24 eggs hatched. And then came the fun.

On Thursday the kids sat in a circle taking turns holding the chicks. Other grades visited the classroom to get a peak at the chicks and to have a chance to hold them, too.

Healey said that whenever they have chicks the whole school becomes interested. Even before the eggs hatch, classrooms will come to check on the eggs.

Once the eggs have hatched the students are always astounded to see there really were chickens inside.

Healey said, “They see life and it does have a positive effect on them. We had one student crying. When we asked what was wrong he said ‘its beautiful.’”

The chicks will be returned to Casey Farms on Monday afternoon after the students say their goodbyes. Many of the students though, Healey said, will say they will see the chicks later. Some families attend the annual Easter Egg hunt at Casey Farms and believe they see their chicks there.
