State's historic lighthouses focus of Save the Bay tours

For public programming at Save The Bay, warmer weather means seals are out and lighthouses are in. Half-day and full-day lighthouse tours replace seal tours May through October and, for the month of May, visitors to Exploration Center and Aquarium in Newport can learn all about how these structures have lit the way for sailors for centuries.

Open Fridays through Sundays, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. until Memorial Day, and daily through summer, the Exploration Center and Aquarium on Easton’s Beach in Newport features a series of daily activities to introduce children and adults to the different components of a lighthouse crucial to their operation and to several historic lighthouses in Rhode Island. Activities include a story hour featuring All the Way to the Ocean, science and climate change experiments, beach walks, and a scavenger hunt inside the aquarium.

The Exploration Center and Aquarium is located in the Easton’s Beach Rotunda at 175 Memorial Blvd. in Newport. General admission is $8 with discounts for military and senior citizens. Save The Bay Family Members can enjoy free admission for two adults and up to four children. For more information about the Exploration Center and Aquarium, visit savebay.org/aquarium or call 324-6020.

Lighthouse Tours aboard Save The Bay’s education vessels give guests a close-up look at up to 20 historic Rhode Island lighthouses, plus an off-the-boat tour of the inside of one lighthouse. Southern Lighthouse Tours, offered July 9 and September 17, depart from Newport and offer views from the water of 11 historic lighthouses, plus a lunch stop and inside tour of Rose Island Lighthouse. Northern Lighthouse Tours, offered June 18 and September 24, depart from Providence and provide views of eight lighthouses, plus a tour of Pomham Rocks Lighthouse grounds. Ultimate Lighthouse Tours depart from Providence and include views of 19 lights and a lunch stop and tour at Rose Island Light. These seven-hour tours are offered on August 20, September 10 and October 1. For more information and tickets visit www.savebay.org/lighthouse.
