Stephen W. Mascena, of Governor Francis in Warwick, passed away peacefully at home, March 24, 2013. He was surrounded by his loving family and friends after fighting a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was the beloved husband of Marcia (Bernier) Mascena.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Stephen L. and Emily (Proto) Mascena. An all-state basketball, baseball and football player at Bristol High School, Steve graduated from Boston College. He was formerly employed as an accountant for the firms Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Cos and Robert Half International, and was owner of Mascena-Ecker & Associates for 15 years. A long-time, active member of St. Peter’s Church, Steve served as a communicant, trustee, accountant, CYO basketball coach and founding member of St. Peter School Guild. Family was the center of Steve’s life. He loved watching his grandchildren celebrate milestones and excel in school and activities. He was always the faithful fan on the sidelines. He made ordinary days special by creating family traditions that will live on in his memory such as “Papa’s Annual Poolie Awards.” Steve also enjoyed playing cards and golf. A reliable, quick-witted friend that could always provide a laugh, his memory will live on forever in the hearts of so many.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Todd S. Mascena and his wife, Suzanne of North Kingstown, his daughter Bethany Mascena Tracy and her husband, Gareth of Warwick. He was the loving “Papa” to his five grandchildren: Cecelia, Elliott and William Mascena, and Olivia and Annabelle Tracy. He was a brother to Nancy Josephs of Barrington, RI and Anthony Mascena of Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
