Steve L. Alves, 73, died April 14, 2012 at Zambarano Hospital after a long illness.
Born in West Warwick, Steve was the son of the late William and Lena (Amaral) Alves and brother of William “Bud” Alves and Earl Alves of West Warwick.
Steve graduated from West Warwick High School, the University of Rhode Island and Providence College. He taught physical education for nearly three decades in the West Warwick School Department. Steve was a celebrated athlete and coach. He coached football at West Warwick, North Kingstown, LaSalle Academy, Cranston East, Shea and Coventry. He is a member of the West Warwick Athletic Hall of Fame and the Rhode Island Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
Steve was the former husband of Margaret (Sinnott) Alves; father of Cheryl (Alves) Carbone and her husband, Stephen, Deborah (Alves) Tellier, Steve Alves Jr. and his wife, Lisa, and James Alves and his wife, Lolita. Steve leaves behind nine grandchildren, Christina, Heather, Hillary, Robert, Stephen, Cameron, Madison, Aidan and Austin, numerous nieces and nephews, and scores of great lifelong friends.
Steve would like to acknowledge and thank all of the dedicated caretakers at Eleanor Slater and Zambarano Hospitals.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. April 24, 2012 in Holy Apostles Church, Scituate Ave., Cranston.
