Still time for singers in mall’s karaoke competition

Warwick Mall is bringing back a classic, hosting a karaoke competition throughout the month of April.

Linda Campbell, marketing director for the mall, said before the floods in 2010, Warwick Mall held a very popular karaoke contest. To help improve midweek business, the mall has partnered with Rick Lataille of WRIK Entertainment and brought Karaoke Nights back.

Mall guests are encouraged to take part in the competition every Wednesday of April to perform in front of the Food Court. There are four age categories: 6 to 9, 10 to 12, 13 to 17 and 18 and older. Each week two contestants from each age category are chosen to go on to the semifinals. The semifinals are on Wednesday, May 4 and May 11, with the finale on May 18, all starting 6:30. First place winners in the 6-9 and 10-12 categories will receive a $250 gift certificate to the mall. Winners in the 13-17 and 18 and older categories receive a $500 gift certificate.

“It’s just a fun thing to do in the middle of the week, something a little different,” Campbell said. “People love to showcase their talent.”

In the past several weeks Campbell has seen a wide variety of ages and performances, “from Sinatra to Adele.” Each week between 15 and 20 people sign up to compete, but Campbell said the crowds far outweigh performers. There are even people who come to the competition each week despite not knowing the competitors themselves.

“Our Food Court is packed every week for this,” Campbell said. “The crowd really gets into it; they are so supportive.”

The idea is that karaoke is appealing to a greater population, from seasoned performers to first-timers. With the words and music provided, there is less pressure on contestants to prepare and can join on a whim.

Campbell said that the karaoke might becomes a summer event since it has already been so popular.

Next Wednesday, April 27, is the last day to join the competition before the semifinals in May. Sign up begins at 4:30 and the competition starts at 6:30.
