To the Editor:
The terrible losses at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut have renewed the focus on the gun control issue. Yet, many have foolishly asserted that if the teachers were equally armed, this horrid tragedy would not have occurred.
The answer is not in more armament. Contrarily, the answer is in less.
The second amendment does state that citizens have the right of self-protection. However, its author James Madison could not have envisioned Sig-Sauer and Glock pistols and Bushmaster rifles reigning terror on small school children in the era of the musket.
In our modern day of high tech, multi-shot weapons, the access to a particular class of guns must be stratified. Certainly, a man or woman can protect their home or business with a shotgun or a revolver. The accessibility to high capacity weapons should be restricted to police officers and our military.
The mass killings of recent times in Colorado, Virginia and Connecticut should present a clear lesson to our legislature and our society, this madness of virtually unfettered access to high capacity guns must stop now.

Stop access to weapons by the mentally deranged. Start setting up half way houses and housing for sex offenders next door to politicians and limp wristed liberal judges until there is real truth in sentencing.

Another misinformed individual who thinks the problem is a particular class of firearms. Start with American History. Our founding fathers kept the most advanced arms at the time and used those arms to defend against the same being used against them. The 2nd Amendment isn't about hunting or sport. Remember, the Japanese didn't invade our shores because of the number of armed citizens. More and more states are issuing concealed weapons permits to qualified individuals and statistics show that there's a related reduction in crime in those areas. The issue isn't guns, it's culture, it's values, it's mental illness. All parents are responsible for teaching their children about respect, values and looking for changes in behavior that could be a warning sign that something isn't right. How many parents let their kids spend 8hrs/day shooting and killing others as entertaining video games? Take off the blinders and look around. Society as a whole needs to change. It doesn't matter what class of firearms honest citizens own, their not the problem.

Another person who does not know what the 2nd amendment is about. It is not about self-defense. The founding fathers just faught a revolution against the largest and best armed army in the world. THey wanted to ensure the people could overthrow any government that became oppressive. That is why we have a 2nd amendment. It isn't to ensure hunting or home defense.
