In recognition of the 2012 Olympic Games, Sargent Rehabilitation Center students participated in their own “Olympic Week.” The games officially commenced on the newly installed state-of-the-art playground with a torch run and parade of nations, whereby each classroom represented a country. The national anthem was sung by one of the day school students, Katie Rodriguez.

In class, the students learned about the 2012 Olympic Games and the various countries that were participating in the events. Sargent Center’s 8-day event showcased different sports that allowed for varying abilities, interests and skill levels within a friendly competitive environment. David Dermksian, Sargent’s adaptive physical education teacher, coordinated the activities so that all students could participate in at least one event. Events included long jump, relay, soccer, basketball, shot put, an obstacle course and a student-teacher basketball game.

Students not only demonstrated their athletic skills and determination, but showed team camaraderie and support for their classmates with loud cheers and encouragement. The event provided a fun and slightly competitive venue for the children to carry over skills learned in the classroom and in therapy. Games were played the entire week and ended with an awards ceremony and international luncheon.
