Students to present West auditorium project at DECA in March

Seniors Cassie Giarrusso, Teddy Ruggieri, and Morgan DiMaio from the Cranston Area Career and Technical Center’s Entrepreneurship Pathways Program, will soon be presenting the Cranston West Auditorium Renovation initiative, and their integral part in it, as their DECA project at the Rhode Island DECA Conference. DECA prepares emerging high school and college leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management, according to their website. The event is held on March 4 at the Johnson and Wales University Harborside Campus. Those who place first or second at that event will move on to presenting their project at the national conference in April, which will be held in Anaheim, California.

DiMaio's father, David, is the president of the alumni association. The students worked closely with the association to enhance the project, and to bring it to the attention of the current Cranston West students and parents, as well as to the alumni.

"We have been really trying to get the word out there about the restoration project," said DiMaio. "We helped with the raffle they just had, pulling the tickets and delivering the prizes, we have started a gofundme page."

The group has been present at the various events held by the school or the alumni association in order to use the leadership and marketing skills they have been learning in the Entrepreneurship program such as public speaking, networking, advertising to help promote the initiative.

"We have gone to the theater productions, the Thanksgiving football game, the Future Falcon Open House and Falcon Friday at the Thirsty Beaver," DiMaio said. "We have set up tables and spoken to people."

Their presence at these events has really made a difference, according to Giarrusso.

"I really think we are getting some attention to this from the students now," said Giarrusso. "The students in the school and even their parents know more about it now than they did before."

According to Ruggieri, the students' DECA project is more than just manning tables at various events and pulling names for the raffle.

"We have to do a 30 page write-up, and it has a summary of the project and the processes, finances and tells the success of the project," he said.

The students will be notified by the end of the day on March 4 at the awards ceremony if they have placed first or second and qualify to move on to nationals or not.
