The security systems are in place, the glass counters are ready for displays and there’s even a cordoned aisle, should there be a line of patients.

Summit Compassion Center, at 380 Jefferson Blvd., which will be the state’s third compassion center to sell medical marijuana, should open shortly, according to legal counsel Terence Fracassa.

“We have all the approvals,” Fracassa said yesterday.

He said checks are being made to ensure the center has a link to the Department of Health registry of patients licensed to use medical marijuana. Patients will be required to show their registration cards or, in the case of caregivers, they will be required to show their cards as registered caregivers.

With the state list of patients at more than 9,000 and growing, Fracassa expects the center will handle about 600 patients in the first six months and more when it’s fully operational.

For the immediate future, the center will be buying marijuana from licensed facilities for resale. He expects the 10,00-square-foot building Summit has leased on Illinois Avenue, where it will grow its own marijuana early next year. Depending on the type of marijuana, Fracassa said it would sell from $290 to the mid $300s per ounce.

“Our prices will be compassionate,” he said.

Fracassa said about $1 million has been invested in the Jefferson Boulevard sales office and in the facility where marijuana will be grown. Seven people currently staff the center, a number projected to grow to more than 20.
