Golf Tournament

 

Enjoy a spectacular day at Kirkbrae Country Club with the North Central Chamber of Commerce on July 14. The tournament will include lunch, goody bags and complimentary gifts, dinner, awards and raffles. If you don’t golf, plan to join us for dinner.

Registration, including complimentary practice range, a putting contest and light lunch, begins at 11:30 a.m. The tournament will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start “scramble” format. Following the golf tournament there will be cocktails, a wonderful buffet dinner, an awards ceremony and raffles held in the member dinning area overlooking the spectacular golf course.

Registration is due by July 10, and the cost is just $150 per player and $600 for a foursome.

At the Mohr

 

The Mohr Library in Johnston will offer Sign Language for Teens on June 30 and July 23, with two sessions held at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Program has limited seats for 12- to 18-year-olds only. Registration is required. Spend some time learning the alphabet and simple basic sentences in sign language.

On July 2 there will be a window sill gardening session to learn about how to cultivate and grow small plants on your window sill at home. A pot, potting soil and seeds will be provided for each participant. Registration is required for this event. Drop in between 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Teen Room.

RI Youth Theater

for the summer

 

Rhode Island Youth Theatre (RIYT) is now taking registrations for the two-week summer theatre program “High School Musical Jr.” With music by Bryan Louiselle and a book by David Simpatico, “High School Musical Jr.” is based on a Disney Channel original movie by Peter Barsocchino. With characters like basketball stars, brainiacs, skaters, cheerleaders and more, this show has the popular songs “Get’cha Head In The Game,” “We’re All In This Together,” “Bop to the Top,” etc.

This theatre camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays between July 14-25 at the air-conditioned Trinity Church Hall in Cranston, with performances at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26 at Scottish Rites Auditorium in Cranston.

 

Tennis camp

 

Johnston Parks and Recreation will hold a Summer Tennis Camp July 14-18 for children ages six to 17. The camp will be held at the Johnston War Memorial Park tennis courts. There will be certified instructors, and rackets will be provided if needed. This is a great opportunity to learn the fundamentals of tennis. The fee is $80 per child. Congratulations to Nadia Sedgley of Johnston, who has been named to the University of Delaware’s dean’s list for the 2014 spring semester.

 

Youth in Philanthropy Scholarship offered

 

The Rhode Island Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals is offering a $2,500 college scholarship to a RI student graduating from a local high school in June 2015 who has demonstrated a history of philanthropy and volunteerism.

The Herbert E. Kaplan Youth in Philanthropy Scholarship will be presented to a Rhode Island high school student at the National Philanthropy Day awards ceremony on Nov. 25.

It is the hope that the award winner’s chosen education area will nurture a continued interest in community service. Applicants must be entering their senior year of high school and be preparing to graduate in 2015 to be eligible for this scholarship.

The award is named in memory of Herb Kaplan, a Rhode Islander well noted for his service to the community. Visit www.afpri.org or email info@afpri.org for an application.
