Pilgrim senior Erica Hammond, daughter of Debra and Michael Hammond, is the recipient of a $500 Senator Michael McCaffrey Scholarship. McCaffrey started the scholarships to a senior at Vets and Pilgrim this year as a means of recognizing a student for their leadership and involvement while assisting their pursuit of higher education. Recipients are selected by the schools’ principals. A member of the National Honor Society, soccer team, lacrosse team and active in the school S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions), Erica will attend UMass Dartmouth where she plans to major in law and psychology. She said she especially enjoyed coaching Special Olympics and volunteering at the Trudeau Center. She is ranked 12th in her graduating class. “You don’t have to be number one to do all great things in life,” said Principal Marie Cote. Pictured with the senator, Erica and Cote is Erica’s mother, Debra, who was clued in on the surprise presentation Tuesday morning.
