Suspect chased in Johnston and nabbed in Cranston

Cranston and Johnston Police successfully pursued and captured a bank robbery suspect just after the incident occurred on Monday morning.

The hold-up happened at the Admirals Bank on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston around 9 a.m. Monday and an all-agency lookout was broadcast. Shortly after, Johnston Police found the suspect’s car on Atwood Avenue in Johnston and attempted to pull it over, but it continued to flee back toward Cranston until it hit the curb at Atwood and Fletcher and crashed into the wooded area on the north side of the road. Patrolmen Jeffrey Fryer and Mario Manella had called ahead to warn Cranston that they were coming, but the car barely got into Cranston before it hit two small traffic islands and headed into the woods. Fryer and Manella promptly caught the fleeing suspect and turned him over to Cranston Police.

In a press release, Major Robert Ryan gave details of the robbery itself.

“The suspect initially approached the teller to cash a check and then presented his driver’s license. While waiting for the check to be cashed, he reached over the counter and took an undetermined amount of cash before fleeing,” wrote Ryan, “and jumped into an older model Chevrolet.”

The suspect was identified as 42-year-old Ronald Reynolds of Coventry. He was charged with second-degree robbery in Cranston. Johnston Police will be charging him with reckless driving and eluding a police officer, among other traffic offenses.

For his part, Johnston Deputy Chief Daniel Parrillo said it’s just another example of how police departments help each other out and all in a day’s work for departments with jurisdictions just feet away from each other.

“We do this all the time,” said Parrillo. “This was Cranston’s robbery and we just helped them find him and catch him. He’s theirs now.”
