A group of Toll Gate student-athletes were suspended for their role in a party that involved alcohol and drugs this past weekend, according to multiple reports.

Warwick Superintendent Philip Thornton announced Tuesday that 19 student-athletes will not be able to participate in game action for 15 days. The players can return to practice after 10 days, and the suspension began Monday.

Beth Furtado, chair of the Warwick School committee, said she had been made aware of the situation and is in agreement with the action taken. She noted that there is a student-athlete code of conduct and she feels it is a privilege to play on a team.

“The punishment fits the crime,” she said.

Junior varsity players will fill in for the players being disciplined over the next two weeks.
