THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES

(One long battle)

The title tells it all: Five armies battle for two hours and 20 minutes.

If that is your cup of tea, you will enjoy the latest in the Hobbit series. Endless sword fights, thousands of soldiers in hand-to-hand combat, bodies strewn everywhere and lots of creatures running around was all a bit too much.

The movie opens where the previous installment left off, with the fire-breathing dragon Smaug igniting the peaceful village of Lake-town, destroying everything in sight and forcing the villagers to flee before Bard kills the beast.

Five armies end up fighting over a treasure trove of gold hidden in the Lonely Mountain, where dwarf king Thorin Oakenshield wants it all for himself, breaking his promise to share it with the people. There are broken promises, betrayals, heroism and cowardice, as everyone seems to be fighting everyone else. Elves, dwarves, flying creatures, ugly creatures and humans are all thrown together in a massive battle that goes on and on and on. The wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and the likeable Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) somehow come out of the chaos unharmed, but lots of good and bad people die along the way.

The final battle takes place on ice and is quite spectacular, but again goes on and on and on.

The special effects are spectacular and the acting is good, but it is all too much to endure.

Fans of the series will enjoy their favorite characters, the unrequited love story, and the numerous fight scenes. For non-fans, it is completely out of control.

Rated PG-13, with endless violence and some pretty scary creatures.
