Targeting Buddy Cianci

To the Editor:

The campaign strategy of demonizing former Providence Mayor Vincent A. Cianci by Democrat Jorge Elorza will backfire.

In the first forum of the final contenders for mayor, Jorge Elorza immediately attacked Buddy Cianci and held on to the assault as if he where holding on to the beam of an open skyscraper.

With more baggage than one would find on the carousal at Green Airport, Providence voters are well aware of Buddy’s past mistakes.

Simultaneously, they are aware of his great achievements.

Seemingly, Elorza is preoccupied with redundantly reviewing Cianci’s fall from grace while never explaining why he might be qualified to run our capital city. Elorza’s experience as an auditor for Price Waterhouse, his teaching at Roger Williams University, and his presiding as a housing court judge must be somehow presented as a basis for choosing him to administrate a city government.

Therein one will find the reason for his tactics. Even his detractors must admit that Buddy Cianci knows how to run a city. He knows how to dream big and see those aspirations come to fruition. He knows how to address the woes of Providence on the day he is sworn in. Alas, Mr. Eloraza cannot justify himself as having the same level of gravitas as Buddy. Thus, his guttural attacks are an indication of inadequate public resume in comparison to Cianci’s. Furthermore, his actions demonstrate a fear that the former mayor’s known administrative adroitness will mean more to the voters than his past mistakes.
