That's Entertainment: Twenty years ago

We reviewed the newly-opened Spain restaurant in Narragansett, where we raved about the Espanoles a la Brasa (grilled Spanish sausages), the Gaspacho and the paella.

We looked back at Rhode Island’s 7th First Night celebration, when Governor Sundlun proclaimed that he couldn’t wait for 1991 to be over. Linc Pratt was at PPAC’s Mighty Wurlitzer, the Balinese Mask Theatre was at Mathewson St. Church, The RI Saxophone Quintet was at Grace Church, the Providence Mandolin Orchestra was at the 1st Universalist Church, with Cranstonian Len Cabral doing the narration of “The Well-Roasted Goose,” and Snyder and Katzberg dazzled us with their fancy dancin’ at Trinity.

Normand Beauregard and the Cumberland Company turned the musical “Camelot” into a “delightful Medieval play” at Bryant College. Marilyn Salvatore did the costumes. Beauregard played King Arthur.

Rebecca DeMornay starred in the horror film, "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle;" Christian Slater played a cop in "Kuffs;" Kevin Kline played an immigration officer in "Grand Canyon;" and Jessica Tandy and Kathy Bates starred in the powerful "Fried Green Tomatoes."

The Academy Players presented their 100th production: A. Gurney’s “The Dining Room.”

The old Howard Johnson’s on Jefferson Blvd. had a “hot deal” for $59.95, which included an in-room whirlpool, champagne, chocolates and breakfast buffet.

Richard Jenkins was the acting artistic director at Trinity Rep following Anne Bogart’s disastrous season. August Wilson’s “Fences,” which won six major theatre awards, came to Trinity in late January.

The RI Philharmonic returned to Vets, with three candidates for the conductor’s job still to be heard. PPAC had another exciting series of Broadway musicals lined up for the year.

Rhode Island College’s popular Performing Arts Series opened with the Lewitsky Dance Company.

The Park Theatre was operating as a “multiplex,” showing "Other People’s Money," "For The Boys," "Little Man Tate" and "All I Want For Christmas."
