The stars came out in droves to the Warwick Musical Theatre: Jane Olivor, Jerry Vale, Al Martino and The Marshall Tucker Band opened the month. Later in the month, we were treated to the Everly Brothers, Huey Lewis, Willie Nelson, the Neville Brothers, Kathy Mattea, Roger Whittaker, Neil Sadaka, the Righteous Brothers, Sha Na Na and Buddy Hackett. I miss the old “Tent” and the great entertainment the Bonoffs brought to Rhode Island.

“Waterworld” starred Kevin Costner. The controversial, violent film was loved and hated by critics and audiences. “Babe” was a cutesy little film about a pet pig.

National Amusements announced plans to open another Showcase Cinema in North Attleboro, across from the Emerald Square Mall.

Ricky Scaggs was at the Washington County Fair.

Remember Ocean Express on Allens Ave. near the Cranston line? They had twin lobster dinners for $12.99.

How about Monterey on Post Road near the airport? They had lobster for $7.95, twins for $14.95 and a lobster roll for $8.95.

Theatre-by-the-Sea had one of its few flops when Musical America brought a new musical version of “Beauty and the Beast” to Matunuck. Even the Big Nazo puppets couldn’t save the show, which had all kinds of problems with its revolving stage and changing script and musical numbers.

Ocean State Light Opera presented “HMS Pinafore” at the Wheeler School Auditorium, directed by Marilyn K. Levine, with Cranston’s own Cecelia Schiano Rodi as Josephine, and Warwick’s Edgar Edwards as Captain of the Pinafore.

It was 40 years ago when Bob Colonna was rehearsing his R.I. Shakespeare Theatre in the parking lot of the Edgewood Congregational Church, attracting neighborhood kids who got a touch of Shakespeare that summer.
