The late First Lady Nancy Reagan

To the Editor:

As former director of the Warwick Foster Grandparent Program, I attended the 20th anniversary with volunteer Dorothy Thorson as guest of First Lady Nancy Reagan at the White House in 1985. As the wife of Ronald Reagan, she related that she first learned of the program when she attended a special needs unit with the president. One of the youngsters took her hand and would not leave her side.

The overnight visit to Washington will long be remembered, as we were treated as royalty. From a lavish luncheon with the First Lady who was kind enough to shake our hand and had a photo taken of each one, which was sent to us autographed and framed.

Nancy Reagan joined so many causes as First Lady and she came across as a very caring person. It was indeed a special moment for me as a guardianship of someone who had spent 32 years at Ladd Center.

It is sad to hear the news of her death and my deepest sympathy to her family.

Special thanks to the gracious lady who cared for the less fortunate.

Regina B. Richard
