With many of those who have brought Kent Hospital to the place where it is today in attendance, a ribbon cutting was held Wednesday for the opening of the hospital’s new ambulatory surgery center equipped with eight operating rooms and 28 pre and post-operation bays. Dennis Keefe, president and CEO of Care New England, called the center that occupies 30,000 square feet of the second floor of the new two-story building on the hospital campus, a state-of-the art ambulatory surgery facility that makes Kent a leader in the field. He pointed out that currently 50 to 60 percent of surgeries are done on an ambulatory basis and that the trend is headed toward 75 percent. Operating rooms in the center are oversized and can be custom fitted with the use of “modular cabinets” carrying the necessary equipment to perform specialized procedures. While designed so patients spend a minimal amount of time at the center, the hospital will offer rooms for those who choose to spend time in an environment with medical attention, should they want. In her remarks, hospital president and CEO Sandra Coletta recognized the continuity of care the hospital has provided the community and many physicians and community leaders who made that possible. She also recognized SeaVest, the company that owns the building and is leasing it to the hospital and West Bay Orthopedics that will manage the center in a collaborate relationship with the hospital. The ribbon cutting was held in the center waiting room where friends and family of those undergoing a surgery can follow the progress on monitors while having access to a café and Wi-Fi.
