Thomas J. Whitfield, 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 12 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband and true love of Mary-Jo (Brennan) Whitfield.

Born in NYC, NY on Jan. 18, 1939, he was the son of the late Thomas and Margaret (Healy) Whitfield. He graduated from Fordham U. and Adelphi U. He was a professor and department head of Chemistry at CCRI for 42 years before retiring. Tom attended American Chemical Society Conferences throughout the country many times as a presenter. He was a member of the Pawtuxet Men’s Society. He had many interests including trains, sports, wild birds, reading, dancing and history. Tom and his wife Mary-Jo loved to travel. They enjoyed our country’s National Parks and visited the Cape Cod Irish Village frequently. Cruising was his favorite.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his beloved stepchildren John Paul (Melanie) Mattis and Jill-Ann (Michael) Rado. He is also survived by his daughters Kathleen (David) Wilson and Karen (Michael Webber) Whitfield and his sons Thomas and Timothy. He leaves a sister Margaret Storm, a brother Gerald Whitfield, ten grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His wife would like to thank Hope Hospice & Palliative Care for their excellent care, especially Julie and Katelyn.

His funeral will be held on Friday, June 17, 2016 at 9:15 a.m. from the Urquhart-Murphy Funeral Home, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 3252 Post Road, Warwick. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery, West Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling Hours will be held on Thursday from 5-8 p.m.
