Threat to liberty

To the Editor:

“We the People” live in a constitutional republic, not a dictatorship; Czar or King. The Founding Fathers designed, crafted and wrote the laws for a reason: To prevent such “abuse of power” by one person. No matter how popular an action is, Congress is the “one” body that needs to make or change laws. It’s the president’s job to enforce the laws, and not rewrite the ones he doesn’t like! The Supreme Court’s job is to validate their constitutionality.

President Obama has declared war on the United States by threatening our liberty by preparing “unilateral action” regarding “illegal immigration.” It sounds like his administration will not be abiding by U.S. immigration laws or upholding the U.S. constitution, which he took an oath to enforce!

What about stopping the terrorists who will infiltrate our unprotected borders? You also, Mr. President, took an oath to protect “We the People.”

The basis for all our laws is the constitution and Barack Obama, president of the United States, is set to destroy our Liberty by his arrogant actions. He must be stopped! Wake up, America!

When a conservative writer cries " We the People " he invariably is thinking only about the privileged class. Republican candidates for president speak in a disdainful tone about half the population of the United States and all those shadowy " illegal aliens ", desperate for government hand outs and entitlements. A while back I read a once popular book in the War on Poverty days: " The Children of Sanchez ". It documents in a dramatic literary style the hellish life in Mexico of one poor family. They lived in hopeless squalor like rats. No wonder they dared to dream about the PROMISED LAND on the other side of the Rio Grande.

Anyone in Rhode Island from an Italian-Catholic immigrant background should have no problem empathizing with these immigrants-legal or illegal- from Mexico and Latin America. I commend President Obama here. He is using executive action to deal with a humanitarian crisis. We must not make a fetish of national boundaries. How many proud and arrogant nation states are visible from the moon ?
