Three former Pats suiting up for Corsairs

Posted

For the past couple of seasons, the UMass-Dartmouth women’s soccer squad has had a significant Pilgrim flavor, with three former Patriots making their way into the Corsair starting lineup.

The trio of Nicole Starkey-Cox, Talia D’Ambruoso and Erica Hammond started 17 matches together as sophomores last fall, with Hammond earning Second Team All-Little East honors and D’Ambruoso recording three goals and an assist.

Despite the key contributions of the ex-Patriots, the Corsairs concluded the previous season on a low, finishing the campaign with a four-match winless run that concluded with a 4-0 defeat versus Keene State in the Little East quarterfinals.

The Pilgrim products returned to the pitch last Thursday in UMass-Dartmouth’s season opener against Salve Regina, looking to put the disappointing end to 2014 in the rearview mirror.

The match was a tight, defensive affair, with the only goal of the evening coming off the boot of D’Ambruoso in the 49th minute as she drilled a 35-yard free kick into the upper left corner.

Hammond went the distance on defense, helping to contribute to the UMass-Dartmouth shutout, while Starkey-Cox was substituted in during the second half.

The Corsairs spent the remainder of Labor Day weekend idle and will resume play today with an evening clash at home versus Fitchburg State before traveling two days later to take on Springfield.
