Tierney wins Manchester Invitational

Undefeated in division action so far this season, the Bishop Hendricken cross country team got to prove itself against some out of state competition on Saturday, with senior Colin Tierney leading the way.

At the Manchester Cross Country Invitational, Tierney ran the 3.1-mile course in 15:38 to claim first place overall and set the tone for the Hawks’ second-place finish as a team. The course, which is at Derryfield Park in Manchester, N.H., is the site of this season’s New England Championship.

Tierney held off Alex Osterberg, from Darien, Conn., by two seconds for the title. Coming in behind Tierney were Michael Potter in 15th, Avery Ingegneri in 21st, Grant Gauthier in 22nd, Dom Parlato in 29th, Tom McMahon in 48th and Jack Rossi in 83rd.

In the boys’ junior varsity race, Hendricken took the team title and was led by Tom Grizzetti, who finished in first place. Collin Manning came in second, Jared Boulanger came in fourth and Caleb George came in sixth.

Ocean State converges on Warwick

In Rhode Island on Saturday, both the Pilgrim and Toll Gate boys’ and girls’ teams competed in the seventh annual Ocean State Championships, held at Goddard Park.

On the girls’ side, Toll Gate finished in 10th place in the Varsity I Division as the top-scoring Rhode Island squad. Pilgrim was the fourth Rhode Island team in 19th place.

The Pats’ Danika Wayss finished in 15th and was the top Rhode Island finisher. Toll Gate’s Erika Pena came in 30th, while the Titans’ Jess Cawley took 59th.

Toll Gate was also the top Rhode Island team in the JV division, with an eighth-place finish. Pilgrim was next in ninth.

Maranda Duffie, of Pilgrim, finished in 37th place, while Nora Hall took 47th for Toll Gate. Skyler Loeb was 54th for the Titans, and Arden Batia, from Pilgrim, was 62nd.

In the freshman division, Toll Gate was eighth.

On the boys’ side, Toll Gate was Warwick’s top finisher in 16th place and was second among Rhode Island teams. Barrington was the top Rhode Island team in fourth place. Pilgrim came in 24th and was the sixth-best Rhode Island team.

Pilgrim’s Brandon Lawton took 41st place overall, while Toll Gate’s Alex Pires finished in 48th.

In the JV division, Toll Gate finished in eighth, while Pilgrim finished in 11th. The Titans’ Ryan Viti finished 13th, and Szabdoc Kiss took 22nd. Brad Meunier finished 40th.

Toll Gate finished in ninth in the freshman division.
