'Tis the season in Pawtuxet

Meteorologist Ron Trotta, who consults on weather stories for “ABC World News With Diane Sawyer,” “ABC Weekend News,” “Nightline” and other TV news productions, gets a smack from Schmitty the weather dog. Warwick native and Trotta’s financee, Elly McGuire, read her book on the dog’s experiences to an audience of children and adults at the Water’s Edge Café where the adults were treated to glasses of wine by Ingrid Lima. Trotta also set the mood playing carols on the piano and getting everyone to join in as all part of Saturday’s Christmas in Pawtuxet Village celebration.

WAVING THEM ON: Santa waves from the horse-drawn carriage as people load up for a tour of the village.

NEWLY OPEN: Sweet Indulgence offered free samples of their hot chocolate and enticing views of their cakes, cookies and other goodies that were too hard to resist.

BACK WHERE THEY STARTED: Those who rode the carriage disembark after making a swing through the village.

KEY ORGANIZER: Marta Martinez, chair of the Friends of Pawtuxet Village, organized the village Christmas celebration, lining up events and participating merchants on both sides of the bridge.

STORYTIME: Elly McGuire reads her book “Schmitty the Weather Dog” to adults and children at the Water’s Edge Cafe. Her fiance, Ron Trotta, a meteorologist, holds Schmitty. He also played the piano and left the group in singing carols.

The holiday spirit was in abundance Saturday as village businesses opened their doors to serve hot chocolate, baked goodies and eggnog, sing carols and enjoy some story telling and a visit from Schmitty the weather dog. There were horsedrawn rides with Santa through the village; a display of luminaries and a tree lighting with the singing of Christmas carols at the gazebo in Pawtuxet Park. The occasion, a holiday regular, is run by the Pawtuxet Village Merchants’ Association and Friends of Pawtuxet Village. (Warwick Beacon photos by John Howell)
