Titans, ’Canes turn attention to playoffs

Posted

The Toll Gate and Warwick Vets softball teams didn’t exactly end the regular season on a high note, but the Titans and ’Canes will head to the Division I playoffs nonetheless hoping to do some damage.

Both teams lost three of their last four games, with Toll Gate ending up at 5-11 and Vets finishing at 4-12.

The Titans will be the No. 14 seed in the 16-team postseason and Vets will be the No. 15 seed. Toll Gate will player either La Salle, Cumberland or East Providence in the single-elimination opening round, and the ’Canes will take on Smithfield.

Those games are scheduled to take place on either Thursday or Friday, pending final confirmation from the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.

Vets will be looking for its first playoff win since 2010. Toll Gate will be trying to duplicate its success from last year, when it went on the road in the first round and ended up being one of the final teams remaining in the state.

Toll Gate is in the playoffs for the 11th consecutive year. Vets, on the other hand, ran its playoff streak to three straight seasons.

Pats headed to

postseason too

The Pilgrim softball team also struggled some towards the end of the season, albeit against some top competition, but will be in the Division II playoffs. The Pats won their regular season finale 10-5 against Johnston on Saturday, snapping a two-game skid.

The Pats were coming off losses to West Warwick and Exeter-West Greenwich – two playoff teams – before taking down the Panthers. Ellen McDonnell had a triple and a home run in that game and also earned the win on the mound.

Pilgrim, which finished up at 7-9, will now enter the postseason as either the No. 6 or 7 seed from Division II North/South. It will cross over against a team from the East or West in its single-elimination first round game, which is also scheduled to begin Thursday or Friday.

Two possible playoff opponents for the Pats are Middletown and North Providence.

Pilgrim is in the postseason for the third consecutive season.
