The Toll Gate boys’ basketball team is bringing back an experienced roster, and that experience paid dividends in its league opener on Tuesday night.
The Titans built an 18-point lead by halftime, as they rolled to a 61-47 over Moses Brown – one of Division III’s top teams a season ago.
A pair of key returners – forward Austin Ouimette and point guard Austin Giard – led Toll Gate offensively. Ouimette posted a game-high 17 points, while Giard netted 12. Junior guard Amari Maduri also reached double-figures with 11 points.
The Titans were looking to carry their early momentum into a non-league matchup with Exeter/West Greenwich on Wednesday night, but results were unavailable at press time.
Toll Gate will return to league play on Saturday, when it travels to D-III runner-up Johnston for a 2 p.m. tip.
Schneider clutch late
Senior shooting guard Ethan Schneider drained a 3-pointer with just five seconds remaining to lift the Pilgrim boys’ basketball team to a 54-53 win over Division II Lincoln in non-league action on Tuesday night.
The game-winning shot pushed Schneider into double-figures with 12 points. Sophomore forward Tyrone Weeks also played a big role, depositing a game-high 18 points in the win.
The non-league win should build some momentum for the defending D-III champs as they enter league play on Friday night at Davies at 6:15 p.m.
The Pats will then play at St. Patrick Academy at 2 p.m. on Saturday before returning home to host Moses Brown on Monday night at 6:30 p.m.
’Canes roll past Davies
Behind 19 points and nine rebounds from junior guard Jake Gonsalves, the Warwick Vets boys’ basketball team rolled to a 72-44 win over Davies in its Division III opener on Tuesday night.
Another junior guard, Nate Ferri, also had an impressive game, scoring 16 points while adding nine steals. James Baldwin chipped in with 13 points, as well.
Vets will have a pair of tougher matchups over its next two games. It will travel to Moses Brown for a 6:30 p.m. start on Friday night, before hosting Johnston on Monday night at 7 p.m.
