Titans, Pats play to scoreless tie on Pilgrim Senior Night

Posted

It was a defensive battle when the Pilgrim and Toll Gate boys’ soccer teams met on Thursday night at the Bend St. Soccer Complex for Pilgrim’s senior night.

Goalkeepers Liam Strain and Kyle Brown stopped everything that was sent their way as the cross-town rivals played to a 0-0 tie.

The tie pushed Pilgrim’s record to 3-11-1, while the stalemate brought the Titans’ record to 0-12-3.

Although neither team found the back of the net, both Pilgrim and Toll Gate had offensive chances in the first half.

Near the 10th minute, Pilgrim was awarded a penalty kick after a Toll Gate defender was called for a handball in the box.

Ethan White took the penalty kick for the Pats, but his bid sailed just north of the crossbar.

Pilgrim striker Austin Asoroona created some headaches for the Titans too, generating some chances with his speed. However, he couldn’t get on the board either.

In the 15th minute, Asoroona beat a defender and ripped a left-footed shot just wide.

Pilgrim then had a free kick right outside of the box, but Kam Murphy sent that shot over the goal as well.

On the other end, David Roa had a pair of quality chances for Toll Gate. Strain was able to handle both shots with relative ease, though, to keep the game scoreless.

The last chance of the first half came off the foot of Murphy, who let go a long shot that caught Brown off guard, but the Toll Gate keeper was able to recover and tip the shot over the crossbar.

It was more of the same in the second half, with both teams failing to find the back of the net. Brown was tested a bit more frequently, stopping five shots in the game, while Strain had to stop just three.

The five Pilgrim seniors that were honored on senior night were: Strain, Bryant Riess, Asoroona, Murphy and Jacob McNamara.

Pilgrim was set to close out its season at Prout on Monday at 3:30 p.m., while Toll Gate was set to host Mount Pleasant at 6 p.m. at Bend St., but results for both games were unavailable at press time.
