Titans beat defending champ Smithfield

Smithfield’s three-year unbeaten streak in boys’ lacrosse ended last Friday with a loss to Westerly. Toll Gate was thrilled to start a different kind of streak for the Sentinels. The Titans handed Smithfield its second straight loss on Tuesday, winning 15-11 for one of the program’s biggest regular-season victories in years.

Toll Gate had been one of Smithfield’s most frequent victims in its three-year reign, falling in every regular-season meeting and losing to the Sentinels twice in the postseason, including the 2011 Division III championship. The Titans got over the hump this time with a 10-goal second half that broke open a 5-5 halftime deadlock. Andrew Zelano had four goals and six assists while Will Patenaude added four goals and one assist. Anthony Ottone and Jack Sullivan had three goals apiece and Sean Vittum chipped in one. Jackson Burgos, making just his second start in net, shined again with 20 saves.

The Titans improved to 3-0 with the victory, a record they were scheduled to put to the test Wednesday against Lincoln, another strong team.
