Titans edge Pats, win sixth straight

Less than a month ago, Toll Gate looked to be buried in Division III-South, sitting in last place as the only team in the subdivision with a losing record.

But with two games left in regular season play, the Titans have put themselves in a position to potentially win D-III-South.

After starting league play with a record of 2-6, Toll Gate rattled off six-straight wins to improve to 8-6. Its latest win came on Friday night against Pilgrim.

A loss would’ve put the Titans mathematically out of contention to win the subdivision. But in convincing fashion, Toll Gate beat the Pats, 53-38.

They surrendered just 19 points in each half to hold previously 9-3 Pilgrim under 40 points.

The Titans also didn’t allow a 3-pointer from long-distance threat Chris Duchesneau, while limiting him to just nine points on three field goals and three free throws.

Offensively, the Titans were led by their two starting guards – Austin Giard and Joel Johnson. Giard scored a team-high 14 points, while Johnson chipped in with 11.

Giard was second to only Pilgrim’s Tyrone Weeks in the scoring column, as the freshman forward netted a game-high 15 points for the Pats.

The Titans’ two remaining games are against D-III-South foes – Vets and Chariho. They’ll host Vets at 7 p.m. on Friday and will travel to Chariho for a 7 p.m. tip on Monday.

Pilgrim, on the other hand, is still in the driver’s seat in terms of determining the outcome in D-III-South.

The Pats currently hold a one-game lead over Vets and a game and a half lead over Toll Gate.

They’ll play at Ponaganset at 7 p.m. tonight. The Chieftains have struggled mightily this season, mustering just two wins in D-III.

Pilgrim will also host Vets at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, before welcoming Chariho for a 6:30 p.m. game on Friday night.

Although the Pats could very well hang on to win the regular season, the Titans have come out of nowhere to challenge them for it.
